1. Physical Photo Specifications

• Size: 40mm (width) x 50mm (height).
• Head Size: The distance from the chin to the crown must be between 32mm and 36mm.
• Headroom: There must be sufficient space above the top of the head.
• Background: Must be a plain white background.

2. Digital Photo Specifications (for Online/App Applications)

• File Format: JPEG (.jpg).
• File Size: 5MB or below.
• Dimensions:
  • Scanner: At least 600 dpi (40mm x 50mm).
  • Digital Camera: At least 1200 pixels (width) x 1600 pixels (height).

3. Appearance and Composition

• Face: Full frontal view with clear facial features.
• Eyes: Must be clearly visible. No hair should cross the eyes or eyebrows.
• Attire: * Do not wear head dresses (hats, headbands, etc.).
  • Avoid overly dark or overly light-coloured clothing.
  • Avoid heavy make-up.
• Glasses: No flash reflection on the lenses and the frames should not cover any part of the eyes.

4. Quality Standards (Common Reasons for Rejection)

Your photo may be rejected if it includes any of the following:

• Shadows: Shadows on the face or the background.
• Lighting: Too dark, too light, or has flash reflections on the face.
• Centering: The face is not centered in the frame.
• Damage: For physical photos, do not fold, staple, or use paper clips on the photo, as this may interfere with the laser engraving process.

5. Additional Tips

• Application Method: If you apply online, the system will initially accept the upload, but the Immigration Department will perform a final manual check to ensure it meets all standards.
• Children: For children under 11 who do not have a HK permanent ID card with a photo, a school document (e.g., student handbook) authenticated by the school or a Form for Countersignature (ID 641) is required.
