How It All Started

Travel is supposed to be exciting — until one day, we realized all three of our passports had expired. Flights were booked, plans were made… and in one instant, everything froze. We rushed to renew our passports, only to hit another obstacle: finding a place that could take the right kind of passport or visa photo.

The Photo Dilemma

Turns out, this was harder than expected:

• Every country has its own photo requirements — size, background color, head position, even facial expression.
• Most photo studios only know common standards (like the U.S. or EU), not the specific rules for other countries.
• If your photo doesn’t meet the exact specs, your application could be delayed or rejected.
• And when you’re already racing against time, redoing photos is the last thing you want.

I once faced this myself before a South Africa trip. The photographer told me, “I’m not sure about their specs, but I’ll try.” I paid for a “maybe it works” photo — luckily, it did. But what if it hadn’t? That would’ve meant another long trip and a lot of wasted time. From frustration to innovation with an IT background, I thought, “Why not build something myself?” So I created a program to process our own passport and visa photos, using each country’s official requirements. After tinkering — it worked! Every photo passed on the first try, and our family finally enjoyed the trip we’d planned.

That experience sparked an idea: What if anyone, anywhere, could easily create a compliant passport or visa photo — right from home? After many late nights (and plenty of coffee), my partner and I built idPhotoGo.com.
