United States Passport Photo 51mm x 51mm requirement

Photo Size & Specifications

• Photo size: 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm).
• Head size: Should be 1 inch to 1 3/8 inches (25 – 35 mm) from chin to top of head.
• Color: Photo must be in color.
• Paper: Printed on matte or glossy photo-quality paper.
• Do not submit photocopies, digital scans, or damaged photos (creases, holes, smudges).

Recency

• Photo must have been taken within the last 6 months to reflect your current appearance.

Pose & Expression

• Face the camera directly with your full face in view — no tilting.
• Neutral expression or natural smile; mouth closed is preferred.
• Eyes open and clearly visible.

Background & Lighting

• Plain white or off-white background with no shadows, texture, or lines.
• Even lighting on face — no shadows or glare.

Clothing & Accessories

• Wear regular daily attire — no uniforms (except daily religious clothing).
• Remove eyeglasses (unless medically necessary with a signed doctor’s note).
• Do not wear hats or head coverings that obscure hairline or cast shadows (religious or medical head coverings permitted with documentation).
• No headphones or wireless devices in the photo.

Children & Babies

• For infants and children, follow the same basics: both eyes open (for older children), plain background, neutral position; no other person or object visible.

Digital Photo Upload (Online Renewals)

• If renewing online, you’ll upload a digital version of your photo. It must still meet all photo standards, and you can crop/adjust using the State Department’s tool when prompted.
